Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or instances of shallow breathing during sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. When breathing is paused, carbon dioxide builds up in the bloodstream and the brain is signaled to wake the person sleeping. People in many cases do not know they have sleep apnea.
