A word on Complementary Health by Mr M

Complementary Health encompasses vitamins, minerals, antioxidants as well as herbal products, so-called natural products and homeopathic items. Many products contain a combination of the above or are available as single entities, usually in more concentrated formulations.

The fact that many of these are marketed as natural, does not necessarily guarantee their safety and therefore caution is absolutely necessary, especially when taking these products, either during pregnancy, or by those suffering with diabetes, hypertension etc. Children
should, as with allopathic medicine, be given medicine specifically tested and endorsed for paediatric use.

Unfortunately, up to this point, legislation has not prohibited the manufacture or distribution of 'undesirable' products. Many of the formulations have not been analysed or quality tested in laboratories. Good marketing does not imply good quality. For this reason,M-KEM only stocks tried and tested products from reputable sources.

Scientific studies are produced regularly indicating that homeopathic products are ineffective, however, experience has shown otherwise. One should not generalise and used correctly, results, in many cases, have been satisfactory.

M-KEM's staff undergoes regular training sessions. Furthermore, a registered Homeopath consults at M-KEM (by appointment). As regards vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, it is important to take the correct combination in the correct dosage. When comparing prices, remember to compare the quantity of each vitamin as well as the range available in a particular preparation.

Those requiring specific supplementation e.g. for anaemia or osteoporosis, should be taking iron and calcium, respectively, in doses higher than those found in multi-vitamin form.

Questions are often asked as to whether the intake of vitamins, minerals and or anti-oxidants are absolutely essential, whether all vitamins are the same quality, as well as whether it is possible to overdose? Those of us who eat a healthy balanced diet, with enough fruit and vegetables, do often require additional supplementation - but which of us do? Circumstances may result in the need for supplementation.

Vitamin D deficiency has lately become a factor, due to the use of sun filters and the non-absorption of sunlight. Having said this, I would still emphasise the use of efficient sun screens - vitamin D deficiency which can be handled, is far less dangerous than skin cancer. Vitamin A, for example, is an essential vitamin, in high enough concentration but should not be taken in excessive amounts which could result in liver damage.
