M-KEM HEALTH ADVICE
MEDICATING FOR FLU (HEALTH NEWS MAY 2011)
Winter will soon be upon us and unfortunately with the change in climate comes 'flu', bronchitis and other associated illnesses.
For those compromised individuals who have not yet had their 'flu' vaccinations I suggest that it's not too late.
'FLU' Vaccines are available through M-KEM'S Clinics. (Travellers are definitely advised to be vaccinated). A wide range of immune boosters and vitamins are available at M-KEM.
In addition to specific 'FLU' preparations available on prescription (which should be taken very soon after symptoms appear) Complementary medicines e.g. Septogard and products for symptomatic relief of runny nose, cough and aching muscles and joints are available. The usual antibiotics are taken for the after effects which could result, e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia, sinusitis but not for the actual 'flu'
Many products are advertised but I do caution as numerous harmful side effects can occur. M-KEM's Pharmacists are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to answer such queries. M-KEM's innovative browsing buzzers avoid long waits in a queue at the dispensary.
M-KEM carries a wide range of complementary medications, many of which have no side effects whatsoever. This does not mean, however, that ANY body may take ANY of them at ANY time.
As regards over the counter prescription cough and cold preparations, the most common side effect is drowsiness, especially for those behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. Drowsiness may be of such a nature that the person is not even aware of it.
The opposite effects occurs in certain other preparations, thereby keeping the patient awake as a result of which, drowsiness occurs the following day, leading to similar problems (as mentioned above). Preparations for runny noses and coughs which neither result in drowsiness or over-stimulation are available at M-KEM.
Patients on blood pressure medications, diabetic patients and pregnant women may take medication for colds etc. but these are restricted.
Lastly, I would like to caution patients taking any medications, whether it is prescription, complementary, or so called 'natural', not to combine these without consulting their pharmacist or doctor.
The M-KEM Pharmacists and I remain available to assist you at all times.
I wish you a healthy winter.
Sincerely Hylton Mallach & Business Partner Gillian Watson

Mr M ADVISES: "BEWARE OF THE SUN!"
The sun's rays are damaging both in the short and long term. Ideally, sun protection should be used throughout the year,
even under fluorescent lighting or when it is raining. However, as we all know, we normally only take heed in summer, if at all.
Sunburn results in redness, blistering and pain; as a consequence, after-sun preparations are used
by everybody. Prevention is always better than cure and thanks to the media and the internet; the
population at large is much better informed and far more cautious than a few years ago.
Sadly, General Practitioners, Dermatologists and Oncologists
tell us that many of the fatalities, as a result of over exposure to the sun, could have been prevented. Blistering, as a result of sunburn,
is a definite indication that the skin has been damaged.
What do we do about it?
Firstly, it is advisable to stay out of the sun between 10am and 4pm. If possible, wear a wide-brimmed hat and take shelter
under a suitable sun-shade. In the case of children (whose skins are particularly sensitive) insist that they remain clothed while
on the beach or at the swimming pool. Sun blocks are essential. In this regard seek professional advice before depending on a seemingly
effective sun block which may not protect against ultra violet A&B rays. 100% block out should be used by anybody with skin problems. It is
essential for each person to use at least a factor 30 at the beginning of summer and then, if so desired, gradually decrease the factor.
However, Mr M recommends that at the very least a factor 15 used throughout. Sun block must be re-applied every time after swimming or
exercise. People with olive or darker skins are still subject to the same restrictions, although possibly to a lesser extent. Artificial
tans in topical or tablet form are available, as well as self tan treatments, at M-KEM's BOUNCE Salon, for those who should not be exposed to
the sun, except in the normal daily routine.
P.S. Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water, to prevent dehydration in the summer heat.
Sincerely
Mr M
CALCIUM AND MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION:
Calcium and magnesium are two very important minerals that we require for the functioning of many of the organs in our body. Essential vitamins and minerals must be present in the human body in the correct quantities because too little AND too much can cause damage.
Calcium is important for the building and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth, as well as promoting blood clotting. Along with magnesium it helps to regulate the heart beat, aid muscle tone, muscle contraction and magnesium balances that effect and relaxes the muscles. A lack of calcium will lead to such things as muscle pains and spasms and the weakening of the bones: rickets in children and osteoporosis in adults. Too much calcium however can cause joint degeneration and calcification of soft tissue.
Magnesium is critical in maintaining health and preventing diseases. It activates hundreds of enzymatic reactions in the body and hence plays a very important role in our wellbeing and emotional state. Because it is involved in so many functions, a lack of magnesium will lead to a vast variety of nervous and vascular symptoms such as tremors, muscle spasm, nausea and even personality changes. Excessive use of magnesium (such as Epsom salt or some laxatives) will cause an imbalance of other minerals and will lead to fatigue, gastrointestinal problems and cardiovascular disease. Depression can be related to high AND low levels of calcium and / or magnesium.
The best way of ensuring that we have all the vitamins and minerals that we require is by ensuring a healthy and well balanced diet. Calcium is best obtained from dairy products and magnesium is found in nuts, legumes leafy green vegetables and whole grains.
To supplement, extra nutrients can be obtained by taking a good multi vitamin. However in areas where a particular deficiency is identified, it is important to top up on these.
Calcium and magnesium are often found in combination preparations. We use this combination when the body requires assistance with bone, immune and energy support. The minerals are usually in the ration of two parts calcium and one part magnesium. Such preparations will also contain other nutrients and vitamins like Vitamin D and Zinc, which assist with the uptake of the calcium and magnesium, and help them perform their functions optimally.
At M-KEM we have a comprehensive selection of the superior calcium and magnesium combinations as well as an extensive range of multi vitamins.

NB: M-KEM now has FLU Vaccinations available which include defence against the H1N1 Virus strain, commonly known as Swine Flu (when stocks are available).
A WORD ON COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH BY MR M:
Complementary Health encompasses vitamins, minerals, antioxidants as well as herbal products, so-called natural products and homeopathic items. Many products contain a combination of the above or are available as single entities, usually in more concentrated formulations.
The fact that many of these are marketed as natural, does not necessarily guarantee their safety and therefore caution is absolutely necessary, especially when taking these products, either during pregnancy, or by those suffering with diabetes, hypertension etc. Children should, as with allopathic medicine, be given medicine specifically tested and endorsed for paediatric use.
Unfortunately, up to this point, legislation has not prohibited the manufacture or distribution of 'undesirable' products. Many of the formulations have not been analysed or quality tested in laboratories. Good marketing does not imply good quality. For this reason, M-KEM only stocks tried and tested products from reputable sources.
Scientific studies are produced regularly indicating that homeopathic products are ineffective, however, experience has shown otherwise. One should not generalise and used correctly, results, in many cases, have been satisfactory.
M-KEM's staff undergoes regular training sessions. Furthermore, a registered Homeopath consults at M-KEM (by appointment). As regards vitamins, minerals and anti - oxidants, it is important to take the correct combination in the correct dosage. When comparing prices, remember to compare the quantity of each vitamin as well as the range available in a particular preparation.
Those requiring specific supplementation e.g. for anaemia or osteoporosis, should be taking iron and calcium, respectively, in doses higher than those found in multi-vitamin form.
Questions are often asked as to whether the intake of vitamins, minerals and or anti-oxidants are absolutely essential, whether all vitamins are the same quality, as well as whether it is possible to overdose? Those of us who eat a healthy balanced diet, with enough fruit and vegetables, do often require additional supplementation - but which of us do? Circumstances may result in the need for supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has lately become a factor, due to the use of sun filters and the non-absorption of sunlight. Having said this, I would still emphasise the use of efficient sun screens - vitamin D deficiency which can be handled, is far less dangerous than skin cancer. Vitamin A, for example, is an essential vitamin, in high enough concentration but should not be taken in excessive amounts which could result in liver damage.
My staff and I are always available to assist you.
Sincerely
Mr M
Mr M ADVISES YOU: "GET YOUR VITALS TESTED!"
Thanks to 'Wally' and whoever was responsible for flighting the televised heart operation and what occurred before and after, the public at large has become more health conscious. Hopefully this will have a permanent effect resulting in a much healthier nation.
Hylton Mallach himself is a very health conscious individual who monitors his blood pressure, cholesterol and has a PSA regularly. He has very healthy eating habits, does not smoke, drinks a miniscule amount and very importantly spends at least 5 hours a week at gym exercising vigorously - he practises what he preaches (and so do many of his staff).
The fact that one could be slim, eat well and exercise regularly, unfortunately does not exclude the individual from the possibility of developing cardiac problems as other factors such as genetic predisposition, stress and many other factors are contributors.
A cholesterol test, blood glucose test and blood pressure check is readily available at M-KEM as well as at other facilities. There should be no excuse for not having these tests administered as the price and time taken is of no consequence when considering the benefits of these precautionary measures.
Besides the above, M-KEM's Nursing Sisters are able to perform a multitude of other functions, some of which compliment the above mentioned including a detailed Lipogram which differentiates the various cholesterol types.
Prevention is always better than cure and as very well illustrated during the Television documentary (Heart Surgery), attention to the above could be life saving.
What is most disconcerting is the fact that many individuals, even those aware, prefer to ignore the warning signs and throw caution to the wind.
It is often assumed that only older people may be affected. This is not the case. These tests are administered within normal clinic times at the standard rates.
Mr M, his Pharmacists and Nursing Sisters are always available to assist you with any information regarding the above and will be happy to refer you if it were necessary.
Sincerely
Mr M
MR M SAYS: "SEXUALITY IS A REALITY!"
Whether we like to believe it or not, sexuality influences our lives to a great extent.
In the pharmacy, especially in M-KEM's Women's Health Clinic, pharmacists and nursing sisters deal with the norm as well as the problems associated with sexuality such as contraception, STD's, education and counselling.
The advent of the 'morning after pill' has created an awareness of the reckless attitude that some people have towards the consequences of their actions.
If pregnancy is the only fear, are we as professionals performing a suitable function in educating the public?
In this short article it is only possible to focus on some of the main aspects involved.
The youth and sexuality:
Due to the subject matter we unfortunately tend to avoid discussion regarding certain issues. Proper education would definitely avoid many of the pitfalls experienced. A child would usually not fall prey to peer pressure or even to an unsuspecting paedophile if 'armed' with the facts. Do not think for a moment that a child of 4 years cannot understand or assimilate the necessary information. As adults, we could find it difficult, or be unaware of the circumstances that our offspring are faced with.
Contraception:
Many alternatives are available. Unfortunately it is assumed that the user is fully informed as to the usage. Incorrect usage results in problems or even disaster, especially with regard to condoms. Haphazard use of the 'morning after pill' has resulted in recklessness and it is important to note that a percentage of people requesting the 'morning after pill' don't even require it, hence, M-KEM's reluctance to 'dish them out like smarties'.
STDs and STIs:
Vaccinations are available which will prevent certain strains of the herpes virus - available for both males and females. Tests are available for those intending to assume sexual behaviour. It should never be assumed that one's intended partner is disease / infection free. Each of us must be responsible for our own health.
ED (erectile dysfunction):
Modern day living, as well as the use of prescribed medication has resulted in ED becoming prevalent in men of all ages. Help is available by way of counselling or medication. Without being alarmist, I would like to bring to attention the fact that this could be the 1st symptom of something more serious occurring in the body therefore self medication should be the last alternative. Medical advice is definitely advised as a 1st option.
Thanks for reading, sincerely Mr Hylton Mallach.
THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The immune system is the "guardian" of our health. It is an amazing constellation of responses to attack on the body by unwanted viruses, bacteria and free radicals
(pathogens).
This defense system works initially by preventing the pathogens from entering the body in the first place:
- the skin produces sebum and sweat which help repel pathogens.
- mucous membranes, such as the nostrils, produce mucous to block them, and the mouth has saliva to flush out foreign bodies.
- the gastric juices in the stomach not only aid the digestive process, but also kill many unwanted viruses and bacteria.
However, many pathogens still manage to get past these natural barriers and enter the blood stream. From here it is up to the defence proteins in the blood and lymph (lymphocytes and phagocytes) to recognise, kill and remove the pathogens. We are sometimes very aware of this inflammatory response going on, with our body showing symptoms like swelling and heat around an open sore, or pain and fever with a flu.
Once the phagocytes have been killed and ingested, the body heals.
Another very important thing that happens during this process is that the defence proteins become able to recognize the pathogen (which can be also called an antigen). The specific protein formed to recognize this antigen, is called an antibody. The moment we have an antibody to protect against an antigen we have immunity. This is why many of the childhood diseases like chicken pox only affect us once, because when the chicken pox pathogen invades our body a second time, the chicken pox antibodies recognise it immediately and are able to destroy it before it has time to make us ill. Colds and flu however, are caused by viruses which are able to mutate (change) rapidly, so when they invade us a second time, the antibodies DO NOT recognize them. This explains why we can get colds several times a year.
This defense system is remarkably effective most of the time, but we may want to boost or support our immune system especially if we are stressed, tired, or preparing for the winter colds and flu. There is a huge selection of vitamins, minerals and herbs that can be used to help us do this:
Vitamins and minerals support immune function on all levels. Especially important is vitamin C. It is a very good antioxidant, boosts the whole immune system, as well as reducing the symptoms of colds and flu. To do this, it should be supplemented in the buffered (neutrilised) form up to 1000-2000mg daily.
Zinc is a mineral that can be used to reduce the duration and severity of symptoms if begun within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms.
Echinacea is a herb that is immune stimulating and can be supplemented either by tablets (2 daily), or drops (even better): 15 drops daily.
Probiotics: these are 'friendly' bacteria that keep the digestive tract in good health. Whilst they appear to have a beneficial effect on digestion, absorption of nutrients, and excessive gas, recent studies show that 70% of the immune system is in the gut, so keeping the bacteria healthy here is vital.
Garlic is antibacterial and antiviral, as well as supporting the immune system on all levels.
Elderberry extract is anti viral and helps to thin mucous, whilst propolis is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-oxidant and antifungal.
An annual flu vaccine is highly recommended. These vaccines are made each year specifically to target the latest flu viruses. Especially important to remember are elderly and sick people.

WHICH OMEGA'S ?
Omega 3 and omega 6 together make up a group of important unsaturated fats in our body, called essential fatty acids (EFA's). Essential meaning they are vital for our body to function, but our body cannot make them, so they must be included in our diet. We tend to think that all fats are bad for us so we avoid them where possible, but the EFA's are extremely beneficial, and should be consumed daily.
The two omegas are obtained from different sources and perform different functions.
Omega 3 is found in flaxseed (linseed) oil, walnuts, leafy green vegetables and from the fatty cold water fish like mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines.
Omega 6 is found in nuts, seeds and seed oils (sunflower and olive oil).
Health functions of the omega's:
Omega 3 is responsible for keeping cell membranes strong. A strong membrane ensures a healthy cell which is able to hold water and vital nutrients, and hence protect the body against many degenerative diseases.
Omega 3 is also used in the making of prostaglandins, hormone like substances, which help to regulate blood pressure and blood clotting. Hence omega 3 has been shown to help prevent and treat cardiac disease, and also help circulatory disorders and migraines. Prostaglandins also have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in such conditions as arthritis.
Omega 3 is critical for foetal brain and eye development. Its intake is vital during pregnancy and breast feeding.
Huge benefits have been seen in improving the concentration in attention deficit and hyperactive children put onto Omega 3 supplements.
Omega 6 also has many health benefits: A lack of it will result in such things as high blood pressure, PMS, dry eyes, inflammatory disorders, difficulty in losing weight, and blood sugar irregularities.
It is extremely important that the two omegas are supplemented in THE CORRCT RATIO. Too much omega 6 will lead to inflammatory conditions, as well as to an omega 3 deficiency. The ideal balance in our body is twice as much omega 6 to omega 3. However, because our Western diet includes much more omega 6 than 3, the correct supplementation must ensure a lot more (about 4 parts) omega 3, to only one part omega 6.
It is also very important to remember that omega 3 oils are damaged by heat, light and oxygen, so they must be stored correctly and never heated for cooking purposes.
There are two naturally occurring omegas in our body. Omega 7, found in skin, has recently become popular due to its anti-aging and skin healing properties, and omega 9 which together with 3 & 6, supports cardiovascular health.
At M-Kem we have a full range of omega supplementation, including prenatal, infant and baby formulations.
